Frequently asked questions
Can this tool decrypt my encrypted PDF?
No. Standard browser-based PDF libraries (like pdf-lib) cannot reliably decrypt modern AES-256 encrypted PDFs. This tool is strictly a diagnostic compatibility checker to tell you IF your file is encrypted before you try to upload it elsewhere.
What does it mean if the PDF opens without a password?
The file is encrypted but can be opened by the browser without a password. It may still contain restrictions on printing, copying, or editing, but this tool cannot reliably identify the exact permission-password type.
Why do job portals and government forms reject my PDF?
Automated parsing systems cannot read encrypted PDFs. If your bank statement or Aadhaar card is encrypted, the portal's backend software crashes when trying to read it. You must print it to a new PDF or use offline desktop software like Adobe Acrobat to strip the encryption first.
Is my file safe?
Yes. The encryption detection happens entirely in your local browser's memory using JavaScript. The file is never transmitted to any server.
Why does it say my PDF is encrypted when I didn't set a password?
Banks, UIDAI, payroll systems, and other organizations may apply encryption automatically even when they do not ask you for a password. This tool reports whether the file is encrypted and whether it can be read without a password.
