Frequently asked questions
How is the performance grade calculated?
The grade (A to F) is calculated by comparing your actual file size to an "ideal" size benchmark based on your image dimensions and type. Files well under the benchmark score an A, while significantly larger files score lower.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. All processing and analysis is done securely in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images never leave your device.
Why does it recommend WebP?
WebP provides superior lossless and lossy compression for images on the web, significantly reducing file sizes without sacrificing quality compared to standard JPEG or PNG.
What does "Hidden Metadata" mean?
Photos taken with cameras and phones often include EXIF data (GPS coordinates, camera model, etc.) and color profiles. While useful, this data is unnecessary for web display and needlessly increases file size.
How can I fix a bad score?
Use the "Download Optimized WebP" button provided in the tool, which automatically converts and compresses the image. Additionally, ensure your image dimensions aren't larger than necessary for your website.
Does the grade measure Core Web Vitals?
No. This is an image-level diagnostic, not a replacement for Lighthouse, PageSpeed Insights, or real-user Core Web Vitals data. Use those tools to evaluate the complete page.
Should I optimize every image to the smallest size?
No. Balance file size and visual quality for the image’s role. A hero image may need more detail than a thumbnail, and responsive variants can prevent oversized downloads on small screens.
