Frequently asked questions
How does perceptual hashing work?
The tool creates a small grayscale perceptual fingerprint and compares brightness patterns. Images with similar fingerprints can be visually similar even when their file sizes, dimensions, or formats differ. Byte-for-byte duplicates are checked separately with a SHA-256 file hash.
What's the difference between exact and similar?
Exact duplicates are identified with a SHA-256 file hash. Visually similar images are grouped separately using a perceptual fingerprint, so a resized or lightly edited image is not incorrectly labeled as byte-for-byte identical.
Does it work with cropped versions?
Yes, perceptual hashing is often resilient to minor cropping, resizing, and color adjustments. However, severe cropping that changes the overall composition might result in a different hash, meaning the tool might miss it.
What's the max number of images?
You can upload up to 50 images at once. Because the tool runs entirely in your browser, comparing more images than that could slow down your computer significantly, as every image needs to be compared against every other image.
Can I delete files from here?
No, web browsers don't allow websites to delete files from your local hard drive for security reasons. Instead, the tool helps you organize them. You can select the ones you want to keep and download them, then manually delete your original cluttered folder.
Are my images uploaded or stored?
No. Duplicate detection runs locally in your browser. The files are not uploaded to or stored on our servers.
How should I review similar-image groups?
Open each group and compare the preview, dimensions, and file size before choosing a file to keep. Similarity is a helpful signal, not a replacement for your final review.
